What’s in your CD player now?
- Phish “Slip, Stitch, and Pass” ... I’ve had this album since it was released in 1997, and yet it’s still a mainstay in my rotation. Aside from “Alive One” this is my favorite live Phish album. I love the song selection and the version of “Mike’s Song” recorded on the album is probably my favorite.
- Umphrey’s McGee “Live at the Murat” ... They are one of my favorite bands, and their music always gives me a release from the daily grind. Plus it’s recorded at the Egyptian Room at the Murat Theatre in Indianapolis, Indiana – my home state.
- Derek Trucks Band “Soul Serenade” ... Flat out, the man can play a slide guitar in a way that makes it sound easy… after listening to him, you almost feel like you could do it yourself.
- Traffic “The Last Great Traffic Jam” ... Traffic is one of the original jam bands (IMO), that until recently, I hadn’t given an honest effort to listen to. After getting this album, I’m sold.
- The Raconteurs “Consolers of the Lonely” ... because I really dig Jack White’s guitar work in a real band setting. I can’t stand the White Stripes because the drumming is awful at best.
Desert island DVDs?
- The Big Lebowski ... Because the Coen Brother’s are geniuses and because Walter is without a doubt one of the best characters in a movie. To quote him…”Quick dude, hand me the uzi…you didn’t think I was rolling out here naked…”
- Tombstone ... Who doesn’t wish just once in a while they could have been a part of the Wild West. Lawlessness at it’s finest
- Dumb and Dumber ... Something about “that John Denver guy’s full of shit man” line get’s me every time.
- Major League ... ”Hey bartender…JoBu needs a refill”… need I say more.
- Rocky 1 through 4 ... the rest suck, but 1 – 4 are some of the best movies ever.
Favorite band of all time?
This is probably the most difficult question on this entire sheet. I don’t know that I have just one, but since one is all you want, then I guess I’d have to pick Umphrey’s McGee. Why?…Because they are the epitome of a jam band, in the present day. Their music pushes several boundaries and genres, and they really take the audience to another place when you watch them. And to top it off, every musician in the band is incredible, not just one or two, but all 6 of them.
Any celebrity encounters to share?
I was up in LA at the Roxy watching a friend’s band play and at the time, and was standing outside while the bands switched. Jason “Jay” Derris (of “Jay and Silent Bob”) was outside hitting on a couple of girls when I heard one of the girls say “Why would I go anywhere with you, you aren’t even famous…”
Last book read?
The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini … Without giving away too much, the book is from the perspective of a boy and what it was like to grow up in Afghanistan and experience the many different tragedies that have taken place there. From the countries’ monarch tumbling, to the Soviet invasion, to the escape of refugees to the US, and to the reign of the Taliban regime.
What magazines do you subscribe to?
- Creativity ... I’m a video game designer, and this magazine has a lot of good tips about the industry.
Favorite websites?
- Moontuckyrisin.com ... You can find everything that is MTR there.
- SDReader.com ... Because it’s got the best up-to-date info about the SD music scene.
- MLB.com ... All things baseball.
Top five guilty pleasures?
- Cigarettes ... I know they’re bad, and yet, I smoke them like it’s my job.
- Burgers ... I eat too damn many of them.
- Beer ... I can’t ever seem to throw in the towel before it’s too late. I love it and hate it.
Best/coolest hangout spots in San Diego?
- Our studio ... Because good music is always playing or being listened to, I don’t have to wait 10 minutes to get an over-priced beer, and because there is never anyone putting on a front or filling my ear with things they “think” I want to hear.
- The Field ... because it’s a great place to grab a pint, some food, and watch a Padres game on a Sunday afternoon.
- Hamilton’s ... because it’s a beer drinker’s paradise…so many good beers and never enough time in a day to drink them all.
