What’s in my CD Player right now
- Pink Floyd “Dark Side of the Moon” ... This one never gets old….David Gilmour is one of my three top favorite guitarists. Every time I listen to Dark side I hear something new. The production that they put into this, the simplicity of the songs, yet the feeling and emotion that they play with has never been duplicated. - I love falling asleep to Dark Side.
- Phish “A Live One” ... This live album has four of my favorite all time Phish Jams in it….The songs “You Enjoy Myself,” “Slave to the Traffic Light,” “Chalkdust Torture,” and “Harry Hood” are simply unconscious! - They are the pinnacle of “Jam Bands” extremely complicated, orchestrated music with mind blowing jams that only god-gifted musicians could pull off. This entire album is like a book….every song is a chapter with emotional ups and downs and the book as a whole keeps you reading and hanging on to every word (Note)
- Derek Trucks Band “Songlines” ... Derek Trucks Solo work is new to me, it’s blues meets jazz fusion, it’s intense, and it’s grooving, and is interesting the whole way through….Plus, Derek is one of those rare guitarists that when you hear him play, you know it’s him, and that’s something I strive for in my own music.
- Bob Dylan “Live 1966 ... The Royal Albert Hall Concert” - Should be pretty self explanatory, Bob Dylan is the most incredible lyricist to ever meet a pen and paper. His insights are still relevant today, and this show takes you from the fragileness of him singing lonely with guitar and harmonica to his full band.
- Thievery Corporation “The Richest Man in Babylon” ... I’ve just been getting more and more into electronica dance music lately….Thievery Corp manages to walk that fine line of making music where the same song could make you want to get up and go clubbing or sit at home smoking a J, surrounded by candle lights with your woman. – I love that.
Desert Island DVD’s
- Anchorman ... ah yes…. “San Diego,” In German it means a “Whales’ Vagina.”
- The Matrix ... (The original)….Revolutionary cinematography when it came out, and I totally resonate with the message that mass amounts of people go through life unaware of things that really are, focusing on things that don’t really matter. – That and the action is fuggin awesome.
- Any movie with Jenna Haze, if you don’t know why, I’m not explaining
- Led Zeppelin Box Set DVD of all their live shows.
- Phish Live in Las Vegas ... (the last two because this article didn’t ask me about any “Desert Island Music” so I gots ta make sure I got some tunes!)
Favorite Band of All Time
This question is like asking a nympho what their favorite position is…I can only narrow it down to 3 bands, and it’s painful to leave out some perennial favs. The most important pre-requisite for making it into my top three is that I never get bored with the bands music. Phish, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. These three bands also have my top three favorite guitarists of all time. Each band smashed musical boundaries, gave the listener unbridled emotion and each band was filled with incredibly gifted musicians who were true to themselves and nothing else.
Celebrity Encounters
I ran into that guy Andy Richter who was Conan Obrien’s side kick at the airport in Auckland, New Zealand the other week. I also ran into Jerry Rice in the San Francisco airport and once ate a salmon pasta right next to Jose Canseco up in L.A…..the only person I didn’t say whad up to was Jose, he seemed like a douche bag.
Sexiest Local Perfomer
There’s this girl Karin Carson who sings old school jazz at a bunch of local places around S.D. I had a chance to hang with her a while back and she sung Stevie Wonder’s “My Cherie Amour” softly to me over drinks after one of her shows. This was literally like 5 years ago, and I still remember it. I also love sitting in coffee shops on random spoken word nights, some of the passion that comes out of people in simply getting their emotions down on paper is incredibly alluring.
Last Book Read
"Killing yourself to Live" by Chuck Klosterman ... Chuck is a free lance columnist who writes articles for Spin Magazine, The New York Times, ESPN and a whole bunch of other hip and current magz….The book is about answering the question why the greatest career move any musician can make is to die early, and what this means to and about all us regular folk. He takes a road trip to all the spots famous musicians have died, from Kurt Cobains’ house to the swamp lands where Lynyrd Skyryrd’s plane crashed and everywhere in between that held a celebrity musicians death. He takes you on a road trip of comedy and insight about music, fucked up relationships and current pop culture. The books an incredible read because it is so relevant to right now, and yet so insightful about yesterday. I couldn’t put it down.
Magazines I subscribe to
Men’s Health ... It’s great Turd-Room-Reading. Chalk full of pointers on working out, eating healthy, dressing classy, impressing the chicks….It’s like having a Dad that actually knows the answers on how to be cool and successful who doesn’t nag you to get a job.
TIME Magazine ... It’s an election year right now, and I feel it’s important to make some educated decisions. We all know our Country’s economy is hurting, there’s a war going on, and there’s really a lot of heavy shit shifting (both that we can and can’t see) Time’s one of those “Timeless” publications that’s old school, and tries to report honestly. My Grandad read it and swore by it, and deep down, reading it makes me feel like I’m more intelligent than I really am J
Favorite Websites
Craigslist.com ... Everything can be found there from relationships to garden weasels to my favorite = musical instruments….I seriously think I’ve got an addiction to searching for that used guitar or amp or pedal at a steal.
Phish.com ... You can stream all the jams from live shows that you could want…I put on my Phish and get my Good Mood On
www.moontuckyrisin.com or www.myspace.com/moontuckyrisin ... CAUSE I GOTS TA PLUG MY BAND YO!!!! (that and there’s a cute picture of the back of my head) Other than that, I generally don’t have time to surf the web that much, all of my “Favorites” in my browser are primarily the places I owe money to every month like those fuckers at Sprint.
Top 5 Guilty Pleasures
- Cigarettes
- Burger King French Fries
- and of course, Midget Porn, I don’t feel guilty about anything else.
Best Hangout Spots in San Diego
Cowles Mountain, Torrey Pines, Sunset Cliffs, Red Fox Inn, and Borders ... yeah yeah yeah, I know, what can I say? I love the outdoors, old people and catching up on my Brittney Spears gossip.
Favorite Twilight Zone
The one where the guys all like “BOO!!!” and then the girls all like “AAAAHHH!!!!” and then the other dudes all like “whoah.” And then the musics all like “na na na, na na na na, na na na na” - I love that one.
